Caring for Birkenstock Sandals

Moms, pull out your old go-to sandals from that "high school" box and show your favorite sandals some love. That's right, it's true, Birkenstocks are back in style! Kids love the simplicity and softness that Birkenstock offers. With different styles and colors, you can find one that fits your needs and lifestyle. Pair them with easy going outfits or sundresses, they're sure to have you looking fashionable and feeling fun!

    We all love how comfortable and easy the "Birks" are, but do we love how much wear they show? NO. Luckily, at Wagner's Shoes for Kids have researched and recorded tips on how to keep your vintage sandals from looking vintage!

• Tip One: No one likes "grocery store" feet!
• Wipe your Birks out regularly. Take a lightly dampened cloth and rid the footbed of any dirt and dust. This keeps odor causing bacteria from growth, lessens the chance for stains and discoloration, and most importantly, helps you keep your feet clean!
• Tip Two: Heat vs. Birkenstocks.
• Wearing your Birkenstocks to Six Flags in ninety-eight degree heat is totally fine; in fact, we encourage all fun adventures with friends and family. However, leaving your sandals in a hot car or in direct sunlight can cause damage. When left in extreme heat, the sole and footbed of your Birks can shrink, dry out, and fall apart. Once you clean them, don't place them in a window or doorway to dry faster. Instead, practice patience by leaving them alone for 24 hours. Although you'll miss them, your Chacos or Rainbows will suffice nicely during this hiatus.
• Tip Three: Moisture.
• Avoid complete water submersion of your Birks, if possible. If you happen to step in a puddle or pond, don't fret - just leave them to COMPLETELY dry before wearing again. (See tip two.)
• Tip Four: Captain America for your Birks.
• Probably the most important tip concerning the longevity of your shoes is buying and using the Birkenstock Care Kit. No joke. Containing a bottle of Cleanser & Refresher, a tube of Cork Sealer, a bottle of Water and Stain Repellent, and one multi-purpose brush; this four-piece kit will save you from having to purchase new shoes. Below, instructions are stated for properly using the care kit.
• Preservation:
• Step 1: remove dirt and dust by brushing the insole with the soft rubber bristle side of the multi-purpose brush
• Step 2: apply a thin layer of Cork Sealer to the cork surfaces (some use a small paint brush to "paint" onto the shoe""
• Step 3: spray the entire shoe with Water & Stain Repellent to protect them from the elements
• Step 4: let dry.
• Cleaning:
• Step 1: remove dirt and dust by brushing the insole with the soft rubber bristle side of the multi-purpose brush
• Step 2: spray a small amount of Cleaner & Refresher onto the insole; wipe away with clean cloth; let dry completely; brush with the bristle side of the multi-purpose brush for softness
• Step 2: apply a thin layer of Cork Sealer to the cork surfaces (some use a small paint brush to "paint" onto the shoe
• Step 3: spray the entire shoe with Water & Stain Repellent to protect them from the elements
• Step 4: let dry.
